June 13, 2019 - New York, NY - Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan - known collectively as I'm With Her - are big fans of the vinyl album format. As they prepared for the release of their debut album See You Around, there was no question that they would release it on vinyl, and they decided to document the fascinating production process.

Directed by award-winning New York Times Op-Docs filmmaker Genéa Gaudet, the captivating mini-documentary takes viewers on the journey that begins with legendary vinyl mastering engineer Bernie Grundman. Grundman, who has been mastering vinyl for over 50 years, guides  band member Sara Watkins through the mastering process of the album. The short then follows the record creation process (trailing the lacquer across Los Angeles) to plating and pressing with master plater Dorin Sauerbier at Record Technology Incorporated.  It is now featured on Discogs.com, the global music database and marketplace, which gets over 50 million unique visitors per month.

As Watkins observed, "Vinyl holds a meaningful place in so many people's lives, we thought it would interest people to see a bit of how it's made."

"This was the first time I was able to witness the vinyl mastering happen, and now having seen it I appreciate listening to vinyl even a little bit more," she said.

Though vinyl was considered a near-extinct format merely two decades ago, it has experienced a remarkable renaissance in recent years. According to a report in Billboard, sales of new vinyl records in the US - which have increased every year since 2007 - topped 16 million copies in 2018, and various sources estimate that similar numbers of used vinyl records were sold during the same period.

This weekend, I'm With Her will join Chris Thile and fellow guests Ben Folds and Tig Notaro for a broadcast of Live From Here with Chris Thile at Tanglewood in Lenox, Massachusetts.

I'm With Her's tour resumes on July 10 and will continue throughout the summer. Among the performances slated for July are headline dates in Pittsburgh, Edgartown, and Evanston, three shows across Wisconsin featuring special guest Yola, and a pair of dates opening for John Prine at Red Rocks Amphitheatre and Red Butte Garden, respectively.  They will also appear at a number of  festivals including Celebrate Brooklyn, Grey Fox, Newport Folk, Rockygrass, and Railbird. I'm With Her Is Named Artist of the Year at 2019 International Folk Music Awards

February 14, 2019 - New York, NY -  The International Folk Music Awards were held last night in Montreal, Canada as the kick-off to the 31st annual Folk Alliance International Conference. I'm With Her, the band of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan, was honored to receive the award for Artist of the Year.

The band is presently on tour and was unable to attend the ceremony. Upon receiving the news, they commented "Each of us have wonderful memories over the years at Folk Alliance. It is really special to be honored by them together as a band. Thank you, Folk Alliance."

2019 has gotten off to a strong start for the band. Their new single "Call My Name" has inspired accolades from critics like Consequence of Sound's Ben Kaye, who wrote, "'Call My Name' captivates from the first notes of simple humming by the three vocalists." He concluded, "It is, of course, the gliding vocals of Watkins, O'Donovan, and Jarosz that continue to stun, their interplay as magical as anything done in the instrumentation."

Rolling Stone's Robert Crawford praised the "ethereal, haunting song cut from the same cloth as Emmylou Harris' The Wrecking Ball," and The Boot's Courtney Carr proclaimed it "beautiful in every way."

After performing over 100 shows in 2018 (including sold-out performances across the United States and Europe), the band's world tour resumed this month. Stops include shows in Boston, Nashville's Ryman Auditorium, London, Amsterdam, and the band's first shows in Australia.  A full list of dates is below.

I’m With Her Releases New Song “Call My Name”

Single, Set for Release January 25, Marks First Collaboration
With
Producer Mike Elizondo

Hear it Exclusively at Consequence of Sound HERE

Tour Dates On Sale Now for US, Europe, and Australia

January 23, 2019 – New York, NY – On January 25, I’m With Her, the band of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O’Donovan, will release “Call My Name,” a new single that marks their first original composition since the release of their heralded debut album See You Around and their first collaboration with producer and musician Mike Elizondo (Fiona Apple, Muse, Ed Sheeran).

The single will be available through all digital service providers. Listen to “Call My Name” and read its origin story exclusively at Consequence of Sound here.

Consequence of Sound’s Ben Kaye wrote, “’Call My Name’ captivates from the first notes of simple humming by the three vocalists. Their voices are swaddled in gentle reverb as they deliver bewitching harmonies, a subtle production trick that highlights the psychedelic tension of the song. With Wurlitzer and fiddle dancing beside one another in the glow of a desert fire, meditative drumming centers the ethereal composition.” He continues, “It is, of course, the gliding vocals of Watkins, O’Donovan, and Jarosz that continue to stun, their interplay as magical as anything done in the instrumentation.”

“Call My Name” marks a creative leap forward for the band. Its quietly assertive vocals glide over the sinuous melody, which is punctuated by subtle percussion and swirling fiddle lines. The song’s meditative mood is further enhanced by the group’s distinctive, shimmering three-part harmonies,  which inspired Variety’s Chris Willman to observe “When all three voices are going — hell, when just one or two are going — it’s bliss.” NPR Music’s Bob Boilen wrote, “They know how to gather round a microphone and sing directly from their heart to yours. Purity is the brilliance behind I'm With Her.”

Aoife O’Donovan offers insight into the band’s creative process: “This track is a result of a real collaboration with producer Mike Elizondo. We had two days in the studio and a finished song, but we had no idea how it was going to turn out. Mike’s approach to recording and producing the track was incredible,” she recalls. “We gave him a few reference points, and he created a beat that became the bed of the entire song. Having never recorded in this way as a band, it sets ‘Call My Name’ apart in its sonic landscape and feel, while retaining the intimacy that has become a cornerstone of our band.”

After performing over 100 shows in 2018 (including sold-out performances across the United States and Europe), the band will continue touring the world in February. Stops include shows in Boston, Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, London, Amsterdam,  and the band’s first shows in Australia.  A full list of dates is below.

"A Brief History of Women-Led Supergroups"

Band Announces Additional Tour Dates for 2019

October 22, 2018 - Nashville, TN - I'm With Her, the band of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan, sat down with Spotify's UnderCover podcast to talk about their recent cover of Vampire Weekend's "Hannah Hunt." Though the group has been heralded for its songwriting, they have also earned praise for their considerable gifts as interpreters of other people's songs.

As Aoife O'Donovan observed, "I'm not even sure this band would exist without covers."

Rolling Stone noted, "All three of them sing, like a modern - and perhaps softer - version of Trio, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton and Linda Ronstadt's brief Eighties supergroup."

Listen to the podcast here.

Pitchfork placed I'm With Her alongside groups like boygenius, the Breeders, case/lang/veirs, Pistol Annies, Trio, and Wild Flag in its recent roundup,  "A Brief History of Women-Led Supergroups." Read the story here.

The group is currently in the midst of a headlining tour of North America and just announced additional dates for early 2019. Stops include Austin, TX; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; and the famed Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN.

The group's debut album and live performances have inspired critical raves on both sides of the Atlantic.

Writing in The Guardian, Emma John observed, "Together their sound is both ethereal and purposeful, a combination of searing musicianship and tender vocals," while Randy Lewis of the Los Angeles Times noted, "The trio's vocals and instrumentals share an intimate sonic environment, closely recorded so listeners can almost feel their breath as they trade lines and blend voices."

Variety's Chris Willman wrote, "When all three voices are going - hell, when just one or two are going - it's bliss," and Bob Boilen of NPR Music summed it up succinctly: "Purity is the brilliance behind I'm With Her."

I'm With Her Unveils Extraordinary Stop-Motion Video For "Overland" Directed and Animated by Tobias LaMontagne

Watch it HERE

Announce Additional Tour Dates for 2019 Including Australia

October 2, 2018 - New York, NY - I'm With Her, the band of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan is releasing a video for "Overland" which features magnificent stop-motion animation painstakingly created by award-winning filmmaker Tobias LaMontagne. "Having the opportunity to create a video for 'Overland' was really quite exciting for me. But the process did not come without its challenges," he said.

Watch the video here: Overland

LaMontagne describes the process: "Working with paper and shadows in stop-motion is a unique process, ultimately requiring extensive pre-production and running meticulously through all the details before shooting began. Lighting and angles were key in properly achieving the desired effect, often taking days to nail down the look and feel for certain shots. The project offered the perfect balance of time versus schedule, with principal photography broken into two blocks over eight weeks of shooting."

"The sets were all built by hand from the bottom up. Each shot was often a mix of various elements filmed on the day that I then blended together in post-production. Because of the two-dimensional aspect of the film, there was quite a bit of flexibility with visuals and compositing. The opportunity to take this song and bring it to life in animation was truly magical. As a filmmaker and animator, "Overland" was one of the most challenging and fulfilling projects I've had the pleasure to work on.

The ballad's plaintive, wistful lyrics mourn the narrator's losses while looking ahead to the promise of a better life out west:

Goodbye brother, hello railroad

So long, Chicago
All these years, thought I was where I ought to be
But times are changing
This country's growing
And I'm bound for San Francisco
Where a new life waits for me

The group is currently in the midst of a headlining tour of North America which includes several stops in New York and California and three Canadian dates. They will tour Australia in the early part of 2019.

See You Around has received accolades on both sides of the Atlantic.

The New York Times' Jon Pareles wrote, "I'm With Her's songs are folky on the surface and skeletal, yet intricate within. They carry tales that are both intimate and far-reaching, involving heartbreak, separation, resilience, mortality and constant, restless travels." He continued, "Sharing one microphone onstage was a subtle show of mastery, exposing every musical detail. The balance depended entirely on the trio's meticulously plotted arrangements and intent listening."

Bob Boilen of NPR Music summed it up succinctly: "Purity is the brilliance behind I'm With Her."

“…quiet beauty, gorgeous playing and harmonies and touching, visceral intimacy” – NPR World Café

Thursday, November 9, 2017 - New York, NY - Today, I'm With Her, the band of Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz, and Aoife O'Donovan, have announced the release of their full-length debut, See You Around, out February 16, 2018PRESS HERE to pre-order. “See You Around”, the title track from the album, is available everywhere today. Co-produced by Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Laura Marling, Paul McCartney) and the band and recorded at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios in Bath, England, See You Around is a 12 track LP filled with fine-spun narratives and breathtaking harmonies – full track listing is below. Additionally, I’m With Her has announced a world tour that will kick off in early 2018 and bring the band to major cities across the globe including New York, Los Angeles, Paris, London, and more.

See You Around presents a warmly textured, yet stripped-down sound, layered with lush guitar tones and crystalline harmonies. The album is comprised of 11 originals, penned by the band in Los Angeles and Vermont, plus the never before released Gillian Welch-pennedHundred Miles.” With each member playing guitar and handling various aspects of the instrumentation— including fiddle and ukulele for Watkins, mandolin and banjo for Jarosz, piano and synth for O’Donovan—the band cut most of the album live, performing just a few feet away from each other in the tracking room. All through See You Around, I’m With Her exhibits a refined musicality that reflects their deep musical roots.

After years of crossing paths in their intersecting scenes, I’m With Her came together by happenstance for an off-the-cuff performance at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival during the summer of 2014.The multi-Grammy-Award-winners have individually released nine solo efforts, co-founded two seminal bands (Nickel Creek and Crooked Still), and contributed to critically acclaimed albums from a host of esteemed artists. The band has garnered tremendous praise for their unique blend of instrumental interplay and indelible harmonies.

"We all feel immensely fortunate to be in this band together,” says I’m With Her. “As longtime friends and fans of each other’s music, it’s been wonderful to realize that writing and collaborating together fits so seamlessly into our lives. And now, we’re so excited to get to tour and share the work we’ve done as a band with our debut album, See You Around."
